United States has suffered more coronavirus related deaths than any other countries since the pandemic began in December. It has surpassed Italy to record about 20,000 deaths in total. Andrew Cuomo, the governor of the worst affected state of New York said the death rate there was stabilizing but at horrific level.

我们着重看看record这个词的用法。

a. 相当于highest 或者 best

这个用法是外刊中常常出现的用法，一般可以替换the highest 或者the best或者其他最高级。

c. on record 公开宣布，让大家都知道

这个表达可以替换publicly

d. 当record做动词时，经常表示achieve、reach（取得、达到）的意思

我们看看原文：he owes his life to the doctors and nurses

owe sth to sb. 欠某人某物。用这个表达相对来说就恰当了很多。

我们再把这个句子读3遍：

我们再来看看这句中文：

再来看看对应的英文：Students at a Japanese school have gone on strike to force local officials to shut their campus as the country experiences a surge in coronavirus cases.

中文是3个零碎的小句子组成了一个长句子，但英文却没有对应的逗号连接，而是用了一些连接手段。

第一小句和第二小句用了不定式来连接，因为罢工的目的就是迫使官员关闭校园；第三小句是通过as来连接的，因为前后是结果和原因的关系。

这也表现了英语是一种形合的语言而汉语则是一种意合的语言。

所以我们在进行汉译英的时候，先理解中文意思，尝试分析背后的深层逻辑，然后用一些连接手段把背后的逻辑显现出来。

In other news, a former army officer convicted of killing Bangladesh’s independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been executed. Abdul Majed was hanged in Dhaka central jail after his appeal for clemency was rejected.

我们看看两个词，convict 和clemency.

首先一起来看第一个词：convict

convict sb of sth. 宣判某人有罪

把它转化成被动语态：sb be convicted of sth.

他被判犯有诈骗罪。

There was insufficient evidence to convict him.

没有足够的证据证明他有罪。

接着我们来看看第二个词：clemency

这个词不常见，所以可能需要单独记忆。这是一个很正式的词，和kindness的意思很像

我们看看英文释义：kindness shown to sb when they are being punished; willingness not to punish sb so serverely 仁慈，慈悲，宽恕，宽容

文章中首先用了be stranded这个表达，随后用了be stuck，其实表达的都是同一个意思。

英文是一种不喜欢重复的语言，偏向于进行大量的同义替换。

所以我们平时学习的过程中一定要积累足够多的同义替换。

France has seen a steep rise in its daily number of coronavirus-related deaths, registering 1417. It brings the number of dead to more than 10,000. In Italy, although another 600 people have died, the number of those currently with the virus has risen by less than 1%.

开篇我们谈到了record这个词，这里出现了register，也是一对同义替换。

用ahead of代替了before

“召开”用一个介词of来替代，体现英文是一种静态语言（动词变成介词也是一种常见的转换方式）

虽然这是一个很简单的短语，但背后彰显的是译者的功力。

再来积累一个短语：get back on feet 重新振作，东山再起。所以，

It is about getting our economies back on their feet.

就可以翻译成“经济复苏”，和Implement economic recovery plan的意思很像，某种语境下可以进行替换。

The British government says the prime minister, who remains in intensive care because of COVID-19, is in a stable condition and doesn't need mechanical ventilation. At a news conference, the authorities also said the number of new coronavirus infections was showing signs of leveling off, although it will take a week or so to see if the worst is over. 我们可以用ventilator来表示“呼吸机”。这段文字给我们拓展了一个表达：Mechanical ventilation

同时我们要注意，“在新闻发布会上”使用的介词是“at”。虽然这是一个很小的点，但也值得我们注意。

在CATTI笔译考试当中，使用比较精巧、恰当的句型结构固然重要。但如果想不到复杂的结构，那就用简单的句子忠实地传达原文意思。最重要的是，句子不要出错。

level off 可以表示“逐渐趋平，逐渐稳定”。和下文中的“a flattening of curve”意思类似。

The figures show evidence that murders in the nation’s capital are beginning to level off.

这些数据证明该国首都的凶杀案率正开始趋向稳定。

Well there was an indication from the chief scientific advisor Patrick Vallance at that briefing that there was a glimmer of positivity. He was very careful to add caveats, but said there was some suggestion in the latest figures for hospital admissions that a flattening of the curve was beginning to occur. And that would potentially suggest that the lockdown measures, the restrictions on movement that have been in place here in the UK for a couple of weeks now were beginning to have an effect. The figure for deaths is still rising. More than 6000 people have died in Britain so far as a result of coronavirus.
